Well, people…it’s a brand new day.
Whether your dream candidate won or your nightmare (or your lesser of two evils), the times they are a-changin’. Some of us are feeling elated, some despondent. Either way, most of us are slightly dizzy in a swirl of the unknown.
Uncertainty is the prevailing mood. Even if welcome, it still can be stressful. So what can you do to keep your cool and move forward with purpose?
Center in your body.
Whatever practices you may have—yoga, running, walking, dance, fitness class–that help you tune in to your physical being, this is where your truth lives. The body always knows what you really want and need. Especially when The Truth outside is more elusive than ever, it is important to look within. Your truth can always be found in your body.
These last few months it seems like we’ve all curled up in our respective corners, hands over our eyes, fingers in our ears, mouths chanting “LaLaLaLa I can’t hear you!!” Now that the big question is answered, unfurl. Open your eyes—look around and see what’s going on, what is developing. Open your ears at least as wide as your mouth. Maybe it really is the case that everybody’s truth is radically opposing at this juncture. Maybe it is not the case; we can’t know unless we speak our truth and listen to others’. Open your mind, and you might be surprised what you can learn about where other people are coming from. Most of all, open your heart. I would wager that every single person in this country wants many of the same things: to feel safe, to love and be loved, to be free, to worship, to prosper, to have a voice… Honor this in them, even when they might see a different path. Whatever you do or say next, do it with love.
If your hopes were realized that your interests are (finally) represented in the highest levels of government, great. Get on board. Put your energy behind what you believe this country needs. Volunteer for causes that are important to you. Whatever your vision is, do your part to see that it takes shape in this new landscape. And if your hopes were dashed, then same (but even more so).
Finally, lighten up! Don’t lose your sense of humor. It has felt like we have been struggling through some kind of cosmic battle between good and evil. And maybe we have been—maybe we always are. But don’t take it all too seriously. Float, don’t sink.
We are living in historic times. A lot of what we believed to be immutable is shifting. Don’t dig in and hold firm, for the ground is not solid beneath you. We are standing on the waves of change. Whichever way the current flows, if you remain alert and awake, present in your body and working towards your own loving vision of our best future, you can surf with grace.
“We could experiment with not getting tossed around by right and wrong and learning to relax with groundlessness.” ~Pema Chodron
