Confidence is an essential characteristic to success for the self employed. If you are not confident in what you can do and how well you can do it, no one else will be. And if no is confident in you, then they are not buying from you and if they are not buying from you, well, you don’t have a business. But confidence is rarely something that you can feel 100% of the time. Confidence tends to come and go in waves. The trick is understanding the current and how to get in the flow so that when you need confidence the most, you can summon it. Here are five simple ways you can boost your confidence, almost immediately.
Practice a power pose
Social psychologist Amy Cuddy gave an amazing Ted Talk about how body posture can inspire confidence and how important it is to adopt power poses. Buddy’s research shows that taking a power pose even before you walk into an important meeting or interview, you can induce hormonal changes in your body chemistry that will cause you to be more confident.
Mental practices like meditation and visualization can lead to increase feelings of self assurance. One way to practice visualization is imagine yourself achieving your specific goal. So if you are pitching to a potential client, take 2-3 minutes beforehand to close your eyes, get centered and imagine that you have already signed the client. Imagine yourself telling your friends or family, imagine yourself signing the contract and sending the invoice. The feelings that you invoke from imagining your goal is already accomplished will boost your confidence.
Practice self care
It’s amazing how powerful simple things like working out, eating right, getting enough sleep and getting dressed up for the day can impact your self confidence. Taking care of ourselves, increasing endorphins and liking how we look and feel will lead to a stronger self of confidence.
Pay attention to and count your small wins
It can be incredibly overwhelming running a business and often we want big things to happen so much, that we get easily frustrated and overwhelmed when they don’t happen right away. But by counting our wins, every little one, we feel like we are making more progress, leading to higher levels of self worth and increased confidence.
Much like counting your wins, actually accomplishing something on our lists gives us a huge increase of dopamine, makes us feel empowered and helps to increase confidence. When you are completely struggling with putting something out there because you don’t feel confident about it but it’s time to launch, put it out there. The more we create and learn, the more we increase our confidence, even when something doesn’t work out the way we hope it will. We become exponentially more confident when we are able to draw on real life experience of things we have accomplished.
At the end of the day, confidence is a practice. It’s something that’s constantly growing and flowing in our lives but adding in little habits here and there can help us increase our confidence for those moments when we really need it.
