Growing up, we hear a lot about the value and importance of hard work, what we put into something, but as children, we may not have often heard of the importance of communication. It’s great if you have an idea, product or service, but that’s not enough, you have to be able to communicate its value in order to create profit.
No matter your business, or day-to-day life, communication is what makes everything run. Language is the architecture of your reality. Therefore the level of consciousness and awareness you bring into your business communications, the more input you personally have in determining the output.
Communication is your most important skill, it is how your clients/consumers decide to pick you to meet their needs. You communicate note just with your words but your images as well (photo and graphic design). Great communication can become your super power that puts you ahead of your competitors.
The 7 C’s are guaranteed to up-level your communication. First let’s begin by thinking about everything as marketing. Everything you put your name on or comes out of your mouth is you marketing your brand to an audience. Every post, email, article, website, radio show, webcast, post-it note… everything. That’s a BIG statement, and it’s true, all communication is about human connection – it is the key to your personal and business success.
The 7 C’s of Communication
Be clear on the intention of your communication. Be clear on how you want the recipient to feel. Be clear on what your target market’s needs are. Look for hidden or ambiguous messages that could be interwoven with your message and clear them out of the way. Transparency is key, your recipient should feel the clear intention through your language immediately, and that intention does not waiver throughout that communication.
The main benefit of brevity is that the “meat” of what you’re saying won’t get lost in the rest of the words, phrases, rhetoric, and/or fluff that may surround it. To be concise is to be brief in form but comprehensive in scope. Especially in this day in age where we are inundated with content, the attention span decreases and everyone is looking for the cliffnotes. Don’t make your readers or viewers work hard to understand what you mean, spell it out for them.
This C and the next are what allows you to stand out from the crowd. Conviction implies a firmness of an unwavering truth inside of you that cannot be denied. This is not meant to be closed-minded in nature, more so that the strength of your truth wakes up something inside of them that gives them permission to stand more firmly in their truth, whatever that is for them. There is a definiteness, when communicated right, that cannot be challenged and naturally ignites a following.
May your message inspire and bring the reader/viewer out of the mundane state of their reality and into a world that feels magical. May your message captivate your audience so no matter how many pop-up windows and text messages come up they are sticking with you. You want to enthrall your audience and sweep them off their feet. Imagine you are proposing with each communication (you technically are), how would you want to be proposed to?
This C is what pulls at their heart strings. This C allows you to bring a subtle directive nature into your communication, it tells the audience which way to go. What are you compelling them to do from your message? The message is irresistible in nature and moves them into action, and creates a sense of loyalty and trust.
Is your message consistent? Are you sending mixed-messages? This C allows us to look into creating greater alignment within our selves and our brands as we reach out more and more. Ideas, beliefs, and intentions are apt to change, and that is ok, but notify your audience of how that change transpired for you so you are taking them on the journey with you. Consistency is related to harmony and form, you want your message to hold a form (think liquid, gas, solid and their varying consistencies) that people can rely on and trust in it’s steadfast nature. When you tell one person something because you think it’s what they want to hear but someone else something that does not agree with the other message you have to keep track of who you told what.
Last, but certainly not least, connection is at the heart of all connection. This is where we acknowledge the humanity in one another. Are you looking at a sale, or a person who has the same array of human emotions as you? This is where you create a relationship with your audience. Also connect can be the seed that is planted of what you want you and your brand to be connected with, if it’s a sense of unity of humanity that allows everyone who comes across your message to feel you.
Fish live in water, humans live in language. Our words are how we attribute meaning to everything we experience. You create the meaning… let your words mean you care, rather than being attached to an outcome. Follow the 7 C’s in all your communication and watch your business grow.
