Let me start on a positive note. In 2009 at the Vancouver Peace Summit, the Dalai Lama said, “The world will be saved by the western woman.” I think we can all agree that the state of the world’s affairs could use a change. It has for some time. I don’t need to get into the details and statistics, just look at any news production. It’s sad, and this change is long overdue. I don’t even want to think about what it will take the masses to wake up to this fact.
But, living in pity or sorrow is no way to change it. In fact it only adds more to what already exists in the world. I don’t want to live in a world of negating without creating something new…so what can we do?
If we cannot rely on our leaders to create the necessary changes, we must become the leaders we need. We must give our contribution. I know there is a voice inside of you that’s either whispering or screaming at you to acknowledge that you are here for a very special reason.
We can embrace change through taking action. By not waiting for change to happen but by being inspired to be the creatrixes we innately are. Notice, the Dalai Lama did not say “a” western woman, he said “the”. We as a collective entity are being called to unite and support one another as we step into a new era in feminine leadership, together.
Feminine Leadership is different than an anatomical woman in a place of authority, it is a way of being that all leaders can embrace in order to tip the scales, which will eventually lead us into Full Spectrum Leadership where we are equally balanced in the highest qualities of both the masculine and feminine as we work together. Below are the five keys to leading in this way.
The 5 Keys to Feminine Leadership
This is a challenge of many women: mothers, entrepreneurs, teachers, etc, we are ingrained to give, to serve, to show up for others. This is a beautiful honor that we are compelled to step into which often times leaves us feeling empty. I, as I’m sure you and so many other women have been asked, “How do you do it all?” We just do, until we’re bone dry, we will. It’s in our nature. So how do we honor our innate impulse to serve, without eventually getting to that place of lack? We make sure our cup is full first; we serve from a place of overflow. When we have done our inner work, taking care of ourselves: mind, body, heart and spirit, we are then more able to extend ourselves in all the directions we are called to.
This also challenges the patriarchal leaders’ fear strategy. We have been led into where we are now through fear, through ideas of lack and not-enoughness, not enough land, oil, resources, love, etc. for everyone, let’s fight to prove who deserves it more. It’s not working. There is plenty for everyone, and when we live from that knowing we share – creating connection and alliances.
This is the primary key to empowered feminine leadership. The masculine is the penetrator, they make their way into things, sometimes forcefully, and the feminine naturally opens to receive life-promoting energies. This is nature in all it’s forms. We can fight it or we can embrace that we are a part of this nature. Saying yes to allowing things to come our way. Sometimes an outward “No” is the biggest internal YES. The feminine is the mystery, the one who cannot be figured out, the one who functions using her intuition as a more reliable compass than numbers, figures, and facts. Sometimes we just know. Trust that, and balance it with reliable information.
When we strengthen our connection to ourselves, our intuition, humanity as a whole, wisdom is there waiting for us to allow ourselves to receive it. Receptivity is to feel. Allowing ourselves to feel has been deemed a weakness by the patriarchial leadership that has been in a constant state of war for as long as time. One must allow themselves to feel fully all the aspects of humanity we all endure and connect with one another in the place of vulnerability, empathy and understanding. One of my favorite forefathers, Thomas Jefferson said,
“Born in the same land, we ought to live as brothers, doing to each other all the good we can, and not listening to wicked men, who may endeavor to make us enemies. By living in peace, we can help and prosper one another; by waging war, we can kill and destroy many on both sides; but those who survive will not be the happier for that.”
Not only must we trust our intuition, but we must deepen in the trust that all is unfolding for the highest good. We are all on a journey in the sea, doubt is like poking holes in our ships, eventually even a pinhole will sink us. Doubt is the enemy. All of these are interrelated, when we trust we live in a natural state of abundance, connection, feeling and all aligns to our highest good. Trust is a belief that the natural state of all life is in alignment with the qualities of honesty, reliability, kindness and compassion. We only leave this natural state when we don’t trust in the love that is there/here for us.
In the new era of feminine leadership that is globally taking over, there is an aspect of inclusion. There is a sense of community, humanity, wholeness that fuels us in our endeavors. We cannot only see our good, we must see ourselves and others as whole, and love all parts of our humanity, even especially the messy, angry, hurt parts.
I believe that a leader is synonymous with a teacher or a coach. A leader is someone who is confident in their ability to see the strengths in others and then provides a safe space for them to put those strengths into action, creating a pay-it-forward effect of confidence. A leader knows that it takes a village, and doesn’t think it’s better if I do it on my own. A leader leads a team and trusts in them implicitly because the leader has used all of these keys of feminine leadership to build that team, it is intuitively built on trust, from a place of fullness to create a cohesive balanced team of equal contributors with unique gifts.
When we separate from one another, compete, exclude, judge and look at life through the perceptual filters of “us vs. them” we miss the gift it is to feel connected. It is always “we”. We are all in this journey together. This creates circular structures vs. top-down leadership, which allows for greater contribution and united empowerment, when all feel they are a part of the contribution. A true leader attributes ‘credit’ to all. The gift, this aspect of feminine leadership brings, is rehabilitation. It says, “I know its hard sometimes, but I’m with you, I’ve been there, we got this.” It says, “I believe you’re made for more.” Those sentiments are what we need to thrive, and for those who can’t say that to themselves, that’s where you come in, with your abundance of love, understanding, empathy and compassion.
Inclusivity = Healing = Wholeness
As we know from our ‘birds and the bees’ talk it takes two of us to create new life. We must welcome balance through full spectrum leadership. This is where we not only come together, and learn skills and strengths from one another, but where we acknowledge our own internal union of opposites, embracing the Divine masculine and feminine aspects of ourselves so that we may live, lead and love from that place. This is balance, this is our inner work, this is what changes the world. This is what a leader looks like. This is the change we need. This is what a thriving world, a thriving humanity, and a thriving life look like.
