Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. No one has figured out the trick to get that extra hour, although it might feel like some people have. The truth is that as solopreneurs, we need to learn to be strategic about our time. We need to figure out what tasks are going to grow our businesses and allow us to be healthy, happy and secure human beings. Over the last few years as I’ve grown two different businesses, I’ve struggled with really feeling productive and making the most out of my day. I’ve tried every productivity trick in the book. I went months where I woke up at 5 am. I’ve had my fair share of 18 hour days. I’ve experimented with outsourcing, batching, the Pomodoro Technique and every other time saving hack in the book.
What I’ve learned is that everything kind of works and at the same time, it might not work. The key to making the most of your day is to prioritize and as it turns out, there are a few simple questions you need to answer to prioritize your day.
How are you taking care of yourself?
You are not a machine. You are a living, breathing human who needs to ensure she is taking care of herself so she can take care of everyone else. This can look different for everyone. It might mean getting 8 hours of sleep a night, getting your daily workout in, meditating for 10 minutes or maybe just have 30 minutes to watch your favorite TV show. Whatever it is, prioritize yourself and your health every day.
How are you selling?
Sales are key for any successful business. You need to be selling every day. Again this looks different for everyone, but if you haven’t done any sales activity in a few days, you will feel it in your bank account. Whether you are inviting someone into a consultation, making an offer in an email or in a Facebook group or putting together a sales page, make sure you prioritize sales on a daily basis.
How are you connecting with your community?
Most businesses are built on relationships and this is especially key if you have an online business. How are you connecting with your audience or community today? Are you at a networking event? Are you having a Facebook live on Facebook? Are you having a coffee date with someone? If you want to build a successful brand, you need to know your audience and you need to connect with them on a daily basis.
How are you in your zone of genius?
If you feel like you are doing so much and not getting anything done, it’s possible you are spending too much time outside of your zone of genius. When we work outside our zones of genius, we waste a lot of time because it takes us much longer to accomplish tasks and they usually aren’t as powerful as the things that are in our zone of genius. I’m in my zone of genius when I’m writing and coaching so I prioritize those things in my day. Graphic design is out of my zone of genius so it gets outsourced or it drops down on the to-do list because I know I’m more powerful through my blogs and my coaching sessions than I am creating pretty graphics for social media.
How are you learning?
Learning is essential to growing your business, cultivating a growth mindset and helping you to be a more balanced and focused person. It keeps your brain sharp and your memory in tact. Learning feeds creativity and innovation and it also empowers you, which is a key trait of successful business owners. You should be learning every day. Even if you only take 15 minutes to listen to a podcast, watch a webinar or read a newspaper, prioritize learning to help grow your business and expand your life.
Focus on these five priorities and ask yourself every day if you’ve prioritized these questions. You’ll be able to see shifts in your business, your energy and your life!
