We entrepreneurs tend to think that if we stop working for a moment, the entire world might collapse. We’re responsible for so many tasks every day that it’s hard to fit in time for ourselves, and when we do try to relax, we often feel guilty or find that we aren’t quite sure what to do.
Nourishing yourself doesn’t have to mean a tropical vacation or a day at the spa. Of course, relaxation could be an expensive, all-day affair, but there are plenty of unconventional ways to rest that don’t require a lot of time or money.
Ready to recharge those batteries? Open your mind for a moment and consider these weird but effective ways to relax:
Try An Adult Coloring Book
Adult coloring books are a big trend lately, and we have to admit that we were skeptical at first. But they have been touted as such a great way to dive into some self-care that we had to try one. At first, it might seem a little silly, but there’s something so soothing about surrounding yourself with your colored pencils and listening to the sound that they make as you fill in a page.
After you’ve gone to your happy place for a while, you get rewarded with a masterpiece that you can put on the fridge. If you’re feeling bashful, you can pretend it was your child who was so good at coloring inside the lines!
Help Yourself by Helping Others
We realize this isn’t necessarily a weird way of recharging your energy, but it might not be such an obvious one either. Making yourself available to support others around you don’t have to include exhausting tasks; quite often it can be a simple chat over coffee while you listen to a friend’s life stresses, or taking an hour to help them clean their house when their workload is out of control.
A particularly rewarding way to tap into this feel-good energy is to find other women entrepreneurs who could use a friend. You’ll get to take your mind off of your own to-do list and enjoy some quality girl-time.
Watch A Movie You’ve Seen A Million Times
There’s something to be said about the classics – whether it’s Sleepless In Seattle or The Notebook, a good movie can help us unwind for a bit. Who hasn’t had a tough day and felt better after a little Netflix and chill?
The benefit of watching one of your favorites is that you truly get to unplug and space out instead of trying to follow a plot line. There’s comfort in the familiar, and watching a movie that you know like the back of your hand can leave you feeling super refreshed.
Stare into a Fish Tank
We’ve saved the weirdest way to recharge for last because this suggestion probably doesn’t make any sense… Right? But believe it or not, studies have shown that gazing into a fish tank for a few minutes can work wonders for relaxing you and boosting your mood. Known as aquarium therapy, it’s something you can do for free anywhere that houses a fish tank.
Even if you feel a little silly at first, you may find that your stress begins to drift away. And even if it doesn’t, you can take a cue from your fishy companions to just keep swimming.
We all have visions of tropical vacations and long days at the spa, but rejuvenation can take many forms. Resting and recharging don’t have to look a particular way, as long as you receive the results you’re after.
The next time you find enjoyment in an activity, make note of it no matter how “weird” it seems to be. That way, you can make it one of your go-to’s the next time you need a break.
