While for most people summer evokes enchanting images of white sandy beaches, family trips in nature or long evening conversations with friends on balmy terraces, for many businesses summer is a dreaded and stressful period of the year.
If you cater to tourists, you’re in luck: summer is a booming season. In most other fields, however, the warm and sunny days can signal a slow-down: clients are harder to reach, decision-makers are out of the office, big purchases are postponed until September.
It could be tempting to throw a pity-party and power down until things pick up again, however, that might be a huge mistake for your business and… for your well-being!
I was introduced to this concept last year. While scrolling one of my social feed, Gary Vaynerchuk popped up on my screen. I do enjoy his maverick, take-no-prisoner approach, so I pressed play and started listening: his video was about summer as an amazing time for business. Quite an unconventional idea!
His take was that since everybody is powering down for summer, you have an unfair advantage simply by staying focused. By September when everybody comes and starts stressing about the work pilled up on their desks, you are well-ahead of the pack, poised, focused and relaxed. Simple, effective and brilliant!
Now, how can you take advantage of this idea to make the most of your summer? Here are my 3 favorite ways:
1. Since we’re at the mid-point of the year, it’s the perfect time to assess your goals and determine what needs to be done to finish the year on a high note. If you’d like a cheat sheet, this is my process.
2. Are the decision-makers harder to reach? So what? There’s still plenty you can do. How are your systems? Can you handle your projected growth? How about planning your upcoming promotions? Basically, you can take advantage of the downtime to solidify the parts of your business that need to be strengthened and plan for your next level of expansion.
And remember you’re winning simply by showing up. This new client who needs his project urgently done and can’t find anyone available, they will be yours for a fraction of the effort!
3, Lastly, you can be strategic without being a martyr. The weather is amazing, the days are long why not make the most of it. You can leave your office and organize your meetings on a sunny terrace or take your tablet along for a brainstorming session in a park. And boosting your business while working on your tan will work wonders for your mood!
